The 90s gave us a lot of things — frosted tips, dial-up internet, and the greatest trading card game the world has ever seen. Pokémon exploded onto the scene in 1996 and within a few years had taken over playgrounds, bedrooms and TV screens across the globe. But while most of us were trading holographic Charizards in the school yard, a select few were sitting on what would become some of the most valuable collectibles in history.
Whether you’re a seasoned collector or just starting your journey into 90s Pokémon nostalgia, here are the 10 rarest and most sought-after Pokémon collectibles from the 90s — and what makes them so special.
1. Pokémon Base Set 1st Edition Shadowless Charizard
The holy grail. The 1st Edition Shadowless Charizard from the original 1999 Base Set is arguably the most iconic trading card in existence. With its distinctive lack of shadow on the card border and the coveted 1st Edition stamp, a PSA 10 graded copy sold for over $400,000 at auction. If you find one in your attic, don’t touch it.
2. Pokémon Illustrator Card
Only 39 of these were ever produced, awarded as prizes in a 1998 Japanese illustration contest. Featuring Pikachu drawing with a pen, the Pokémon Illustrator is the rarest Pokémon card in existence. One sold for $5.275 million in 2022. Yes, really.
3. 1999 Pokémon Pewter Picture Frame
Beyond cards, official Nintendo Pokémon merchandise from 1999 is increasingly rare. The Official 1999 Pokémon Pewter Picture Frame is a stunning piece of original Nintendo merchandise that most collectors have never even seen in person. New in box examples are extraordinarily hard to find — and we happen to have one at The RetroVerse.
4. Trophy Pikachu Trainer Card
Awarded to top finishers at official Pokémon tournaments in Japan during 1997–1998, the Trophy Pikachu cards (Gold, Silver and Bronze) are among the rarest tournament prizes ever produced. Only a handful exist worldwide.
5. Pokémon Base Set Booster Box (Sealed)
A sealed 1st Edition Base Set booster box is the ultimate collector’s item. With 36 packs inside, each potentially containing a 1st Edition Charizard, sealed boxes have sold for over $400,000. Even Unlimited print sealed boxes command five-figure sums.
6. Snap Pokémon Cards
Released as prizes for the Pokémon Snap contest in 1999, these cards featured photos taken by players in the game. Only 20 copies of each were produced, making them extraordinarily rare. Most collectors will never own one.
7. Pokémon TCG Handmade Keyrings from Authentic Cards
While not vintage rarities, handmade Pokémon TCG keyrings crafted from authentic original cards are a brilliant way to carry a piece of Pokémon history with you every day. Each one is unique — a wearable piece of 90s nostalgia. Find them exclusively at The RetroVerse.
8. Pokémon Prerelease Raichu
Accidentally distributed before the official release of the Jungle set, the Prerelease Raichu is one of the most mysterious cards in existence. Only around 10 are believed to exist, making it one of the rarest error cards ever produced.
9. Japanese Vending Machine Cards
In the late 90s, Japan had Pokémon card vending machines that dispensed exclusive cards not available in booster packs. These “Vending Series” cards are largely unknown outside Japan and are highly sought after by international collectors.
10. SIR & SAR Extended Art Cards (Modern Rarities)
While not strictly 90s, the modern Special Illustration Rare (SIR) and Special Art Rare (SAR) cards are the spiritual successors to the holographic cards that defined 90s collecting. Cards like the Charizard Obsidian Flames SIR and Gastly Temporal Forces SAR are already commanding serious collector premiums — and we have them at The RetroVerse.
